Media Makers is a creative and social club where students can develop their artistic and professional practice and collaborate on audio-visual projects.

Working together with staff, artists, and professionals in Amsterdam’s media scene, students have the opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of media production, encompassing everything from filmmaking to curation, event coordination and more.

Every few weeks, we come together in OMHP for a regularly scheduled brief, suggesting prompts that students can interpret for their own artistic projects. We then offer a series of workshops where we help students conceptualise and execute their ideas, inviting artists and professionals to share their expertise in the relevant fields.

Each block, we showcase and celebrate the amazing work being produced during our regular screenings. In June, we also hold our Media Makers Festival where we screen the best works in a curated festival program developed by students, for students.

At the start of each block, we put together a brief; in short, we provide a prompt that helps students generate unique ideas for their artistic projects. Then, students break out into small groups to discuss their ideas and develop a plan of action. Students can either develop an original idea based on this prompt or simply work on an existing idea. We find that this spontaneous and collaborative approach is one of the best ways to stimulate creative work.
To help students sharpen their production skills, Media Makers organises workshops with artists and professionals across a variety of media fields. Thus far, we have provided workshops related to film production and funding, festival curation, acting and directing, editing, sound recording, and AI art.
At the end of each creative block, students come together to present their work. Together we celebrate the amazing films being produced and host informal Q&A’s that allow students to get feedback and talk about their creative process.
In June 2023, we hosted the first ever Media Makers Film Festival in Ventilator Cinema at OT301. The thematics, programming, and general artistic vision is developed by students with the supervision of the club founders, offering a space for students to develop concrete knowledge of festival programming and development.
