KUNO Workshop ‘Ethical, Inclusive and Equitable Communication on Humanitarian Aid’

Today from 15.00-17.00 hrs, HVL/BuzzHouse’s Co-Working Space will be used for the KUNO workshop ‘Ethical, Inclusive and Equitable Communication on Humanitarian Aid’ provided by the Expertise Centre Humanitarian Communication (with from 17.00-18.00 hrs drinks and bites).

Creating and communicating a meaningful and balanced message to properly inform an audience can be a real challenge; communication professionals of international NGOs know this. How should the work of INGOs be communicated? How should people in vulnerable situations be represented? How to create awareness without falling into the traps of white saviourism and black victimhood? In this 2-hour training, the founders of the Expertise Centre Humanitarian Communication (HumCom), Emiel Martens and Wouter Oomen, will introduce the academic analyses and ethical dilemmas surrounding the field of humanitarian communication. In addition, they will present the new Inclusive Communication Guide for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid that they created together with Partos, including an Inclusive Language Glossary discussing problematic terms and phrases often used in international cooperation and humanitarian aid.

Speakers

  • Emiel Martens (PhD), Assistant Professor in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, Senior Researcher in Arts and Culture Studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Co-Director of the Expertise Centre Humanitarian Communication.

  • Wouter Oomen (PhD), Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Media Studies at Utrecht University, and Co-Director of the Expertise Centre Humanitarian Communication.
