Film Club Screening

Today from 17:00-20.00 hrs, the UvA Film Club will host their weekly screening in PC Hoofthuis (Room 1.04)! This week's film is Pandora’s Box (dir. G.W. Pabst, 1929), with an introduction by Mel Ketelaars.

Silent film director G. W. Pabst introduces the world to Louise Brooks in her iconic role as Lulu, in the Weimar classic Pandora’s Box (1929). Controversial during its release, this Weimar era silent film tells the intriguing story of Lulu, a sex worker who seduces the people around her and takes them with her into a downward spiral. With sexuality and female desire at the centre stage, Pandora’s Box is surprisingly modern and daring, not shying away from showing the audience one of the first lesbian subplots in cinema history. Although subtle, the queer undertones in this film deserve to be celebrated. Pabst turned Louise Brooks into an icon, with her sharp bob and her bold and gutsy performance, catapulting her into fame together with Diary of a Lost Girl (1929) and Miss Europe (1930), making her unforgettable. Later known as one of the most infamous flapper girls of her time, Brooks pulled people in with her performance as Lulu, leading to the rediscovery of the film in the 1950s, turning a censored and condemned film into a Weimar classic.
